Atom Parts Flashcards
Where are the groups in a periodic table?
Elements with similar chemical properties vertical columns
Where are the periods in a periodic table?
Elements arranged in a horizontal row, whose properties change from metallic on the left to non-metallic on the right.
What are protons?
Heavy positively charged particles found in the nucleus.
What are electrons?
Negatively charged particles with almost no mass. They circle the nucleus at different energy levels.
What is the letter that represents the atomic number?
Z
What does the atomic number represent?
The number of protons & electrons in the nucleus of the atom IF the atom is electronically netural.
What is the letter that represents the atomic mass?
A
What is the formula for finding the number of neutrons?
N = A - Z
Neutrons = Atomic mass - Atomic number
What are the filling rules for a Bohr Rutherford diagram?
2, 8, 8, 18
What is the octet rule?
It is a rule that states that all atoms want to have 8 outer electrons called valence electrons so the atom can be stable.
