Compounds Flashcards
Compound
a compound is a pure substance made up of two or more different elements that are chemically joined together
mixture
a mixture made from different substances that aren’t chemically joined together
examples of compounds
water, carbon dioxide, iron sulfide
examples of mixtures
air, sea water (Water and salt ), mud (Dirt and water)
properties of compound
they are different from the properties of the elements they contain. Example: hydrogen and oxygen are both gases, but water is a liquid
how do you separate the elements in a compound
by using another chemical reaction
differences between compounds and mixtures:
- the elements in a compound are chemically joined while the substances in a mixture aren’t
- the elements in a mixture keep their properties, while a compound has completely new properties
- mixtures can be separated by physical methods while compounds can be separated by chemical reactions
water is made up of
hydrogen and oxygen
magnesium oxide is made up of
magnesium and oxygen
