Composite Materials Flashcards
1
Q
Definition of composite materials
A
Structural material made when two or more materials are bonded together
2
Q
Structure of composite materials
A
Consists of a reinforcing material that provides strength and a bonding agent (the matrix - in a form of glues and resins)
3
Q
Carbon fibre
A
Carbon fibres, epoxy resin
4
Q
Reinforced concrete
A
Steel bars, concrete
5
Q
Glass reinforced plastic (GRP)
A
Glass fibres, polyester resin
6
Q
Laminated glass
A
Polycarbonate, polyester resin
7
Q
Tufnol
A
Woven linen layers, phenolic resin
8
Q
Benefits of composite materials
A
- Improved mechanical and other properties
- GOOD STRENGTH TO WEIGHT RATIO
9
Q
Glass fibre
A
- A string of fibre woven together
- Loose strands
- Non-woven matting of short strands
- A matrix of polyester resin
- Used in large items, boat hulls, septic tanks and pond liners
10
Q
Fibre glass manufacture
A
- Wax is applied as a mould release
- Gel coat is applied to provide colour
- Fibre glass, resin and catalyst is applied in layers and rolled out
- After curing, the part is removed from the mould excess material is trimmed and it is ready for assembly
11
Q
Composite material hazards
A
- Skin irritation due to styrene
- Peroxide in catalysts causes damage when in contact with eyes
- Toxic gases are given off
- Fibres cause skin irritation
- Dust generated when finishing
- Styrene vapours are a fire hazard
