Component Prep and Therapy Flashcards
provides the necessary/correct component that should be given to the patient
Transfusion Therapy
Most important factor to consider in preparing a component and transfusion therapy
Patient’s condition
Equipment in the Component Manufacturing Laboratory (6)
- Centrifuge
- Plasma Expressors
- Tubing Sealers
- Sterile Connection Devices
- Storage Devices
- Quadruple Bag
typically either large floor units or large table top units that can spin a maximum of 6 to 12 units of whole blood at once
Centrifuge
Purpose of centrifuge
Separate red blood cells
from plasma and other component
Centrifugation depends on the following
conditions: (2)
- Length/duration
- Speed
Spin Conditions:
Red blood cells + plasma
5,000 x g, 5 minutes (Soft Spin)
Spin Conditions:
Red blood cells + platelet-rich
plasma
2,000 g, 3 minutes
Spin Conditions:
Harvesting platelets or
Cryoprecipitate from plasma
5,000 x g, 7
minutes (Hard Spin)
Method of Centrifugation:
Blood is processed in batches or cycles.
Intermittent Flow Centrifugation (IFC)
Method of Centrifugation:
The processes of blood withdrawal, processing, and reinfusion are performed simultaneously in an ongoing manner.
Continuous Flow Centrifugation (CFC)
Mechanical devices that
apply pressure to the
blood bag, which allows
blood components to
flow from one bag to
another by way of the
integrated tubing system.
Plasma Expressors
What products are removed/separated from the red blood cells?
Plasma products
This help prepare a component for another therapy indications
Plasma Expressors
The tubing that connects blood bags is usually made of which material?
Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)
