Component 2 EQ1 and 2 Flashcards
What is a disconcordant coastline?
Where the rock strata are perpendicular to the coast, with different types of rock resulting in uneven erosion
What is the difference between a joint and fault?
A joint is small and usually vertical, a fault is a larger crack caused by past tectonic processes
What is swash?
Water rushing up a beach from waves
What is a concordant coastline?
Where the rock strata are parallel to the coast, meaning less erosion, but coves form where the sea manages to break through
What is a bay?
A broad inlet of the sea where the land curves in
Give two characteristics of a constructive waves
Low amplitude,
long wavelength,
Stronger swash than backwash,
Lower wave frequency(6-8 waves per minute)
Give two types of Mass movement
Rotational slip
Rock slides
Explain hydraulic action
Water enters cracks in rocks, usually on a cliff, air already inside is consequently under pressure from the water and cannot escape, when water leaves air blasts out and forces crack further apart making crack larger
Give two characteristics of a destructive wave
High amplitude,
Short wavelength,
Stronger backwash than swash
Higher wave frequency(10-14 waves per minute)
What is the difference between weathering and erosion?
Weathering is the breaking up of things, erosion is breaking them up but also the transportation of them to where they finally get deposited
