what is a masthead?
the large font title at the top of a newspaper front page containing the newspaper’s title
what is a headline?
a phrase summarising the story
what is a caption?
a piece of text written beneath a picture to show the meaning of it
what is the standfirst?
an introductory paragraph in an article, printed in larger or bolder type or in capitals, which summarises the article
what is a trail?
a panel that tempts the reader inside the newspaper
what is an anchorage?
the words that go along with images to give those pictures a certain meaning in a specific context
what is the splash?
the lead story in a newspaper
what is the secondary story?
an extra story on the front page, often acting as a trail to make readers to keep reading
what is the by-line?
the printed line of text in a newspaper that names the writer of an article
what is a plug?
an advert for other items or features in the newspaper
how does The Guardian present Boris Johnson?
presented to be clown-like:
-newspaper is against the conservatives, so they make out that they are manipulative
- an image of him running with his dog
- cartoon fish on his shorts
- BJ shown to be not athletic
- not an image you’d want to see of your PM
how does The Sun present itself and the main story?
-they want to be seen as patriotic
- main story has sense of urgency as the new year comes
urgency - needle on Big Ben implies time is running out
patriotic - puff has a Union Jack inside, persuading people to help their country
what is The Sun in favour of?
they support Brexit and the referendum
