Component 1: Biological Compounds. 10/09/15 Flashcards
Composition of the human body by molecule
Water: 64% Protein: 20% Fat: 10% Minerals: 5% Carbon dioxide: 1%
Atom
Smallest unit of matter that can take part in a chemical reaction.
Proton
A positively charged particle found in the nucleus of an atom.
Neutron
A particle found in the nucleus of an atom. It has the same mass as a proton but no charge.
Electron
A negatively charged particle with very little mass that orbits around the nucleus.
Element
A substance that cannot be split chemically into simpler substances.
Molecule
Smallest arrangement of an element or compound that an exist on its own. One molecule is made of a group of atoms held together by bonds.
Organic compound
Compound that contain carbon (except carbon dioxide and monoxide and carbonates.)
Inorganic compound
Compounds that do not contain carbon (except carbon dioxide and monoxide and carbonates)
Ion
Atom or group of atoms that are either positively or negatively charged.
Polymer
Very long chain molecule made up of many monomers
Compound
Chemical substances made up of two or more elements bonded together- cannot be separated physically.
Metabolism
Sum of chemical reactions inside the body
Mg2+
Component of chlorophyll molecule
Fe3+
Component of haemoglobin in the red blood cells
