What is compliance?
Compliance is the act of agreeing with a demand or a proposal. It suggests a passive approach by the patient.
What is adherence?
Adherence is the degree to which a person’s behaviour coincides with medical advice. It requires the patient’s agreement with the recommendations
What is motivation?
Motivation refers to the stimulus that induces a person to adopt a specific behaviour (intrinsic or extrinsic).
What is the Cognitive hypothesis model of compliance (Ley,1981;1989)?
Patient satisfaction with the consultation
Understanding of information provided
Recall of information

What are Constraints affecting exercise compliance?
Attitudinal - challenge level unequal to patient skill level.
Communicative - poor communication with the patient.
Economic - lack of financial resources.
Experiential past negative experience with service or exercise.
Health constraints – real / perceived.
Lack of support – family / friends to assist with exercise.
Lack of physical resources in the community – facilities / equipment.
Temporal barriers – real / perceived no time to conduct a proposed activity.
Choice - the patient is not part of the goal setting procedure.
