Complex Within Subjects Anova Flashcards
what is a complex within subjects anova
a within subjects anova with more than one IV
what does a complex within subjects anova mean?
lots of testing
all participants contribute score to each condition
give an example of this type of study
effect stress in different locations on social behaviour
IV 1= stress (high, medium, none)
IV 2= location (home, uni, underground)
DV= behaviour observed
total of 9 conditions looking for differences within the pp in different condition
What are the assumptions of this design
normally distributed data
ratio / interval / ordinal
sphericity (similar to variance in between subjects anova)
(equality of variances in differences between levels)
why cannot sphericity be violated?
cannot be assessed / violated for 2 level IV studies because there is nothing to compare to. only have w/ 3+ levels.
how do you check for sphericity
check sphericity of main effects and interactions Mauchley’s test correlates variances and therefore checks sphericity - we want it to be insignificant
explain Mauchley’s test
we have each Mauchleys figure for each main effect and interactions but don’t want to report this- looking for more info.
what do you do if there is a significant interaction?
post hoc comparisons, either syntax (add command) / series of t-tests- paired sample t test (within subjects)
have to compute new variable - write basic formula of the 3 variables added together then divide by three. repeat this for the different types of dependent variable.
