Complex Experimental Designs Flashcards
Adding Levels and IV’s
-Rules out confounds
-Better approximate real-world conditions
-More efficient
Factorial Design
-Simple experiment with multiple levels
-Levels of a IV are paired with other levels of other IV’s
Terminology:
-2x2-Two IV’s with two levels
-2x3-Two IV’s one with 2 levels one with 3
-Cell: Subsample/subgroup involved in a specific combination of factors
-Multiply factorial #s to find how many cells you have
-Main effect: Difference in means across levels of a given factor, collapsing across all other factors
-Interaction effect:
-Effect of one factor on the DV at one level of a different factor
-Effect is conditioned on the level of another factor
Interactions
-Magnitude or direction of an effect of one variable on the outcome variable depends on another variable
-Joint effects are greater than the sum of the effects
Mixed Factorial Design
-Some within subjects’ factors and some between subjects’ factors
