absolute location
the physical whereabouts of a place as shown in a map or geographic representation
lattitude
imaginary grid lines measuring distsnces North/South; parallel to the equator
longitude
imaginaty gridlines measuring distances East / West; parallel to the prime meridian
relative location
most commonly used location; a description of a place in terms of other places
place and region
the basic units of geography; used to explore the physical and human characteristics of areas to understand how the areas work
place
larger unit of geography; a unique combination of physical and cultural attributes that give each location its individual “stamp” and help us understand its nature
physical characteristics
characteristics that comprise of a location’s natural environment and emenate from geological, hydrological, atmospheric, and biological proccesses present
human characteristics
characteristics of a place derived from the chsnges to the environment as a result of human ideas and actions
regions
smaller, more manageable units of geography with unifying characteristics that may be physical, cultural, or human-based
formal regions / uniform regions
areas that have common cultural or physicsl fratures, often defined by governmental or administrative boundaries
functional regions / nodal regions
areas linked together by some function’s influence on them; these areas cease to exist when the function does; defined by the places affected by the movement of some phenomenon, or node, from its source
vernacular region
areas loosely defined by people’s perceptions; boundaries determined by people’s beliefs and not a scientifically measurable process
cultural diffusion
an aspect of movement that focuses on how ideas, innovation, and ideology spread from one to another
spacial interaction
describes how places interact through movement
friction of distance
the degree to which distsnce interferes with an interaction
