Phonological Awareness
Ability to focus on the sounds of speech as distinct from its meaning; on rhythm and that certain words rhyme, and on the separate sounds.
Ex. Children play with language by repeating syllables
Phonemic Awareness
Being able to manipulate, recognize, and hear phonemes or sounds.
Only addresses phonemes and sounds.
Phonemic Awareness
Elements of Alphabetic Principle
Letter names, Graphophonemic knowledge, and the relationship of the letters in printed words to spoken language.
Graphophonemic Knowledge
Knowing the sounds that letters represent, sometimes called phonics.
