Compendium Flashcards
What is the function of the foot?
mobile adaptor to terrain
it is a rigid level for propulsion
Foot arches are supported and controlled by
boney congruency
static restraints
dynamic extrinsic and intrinsic muscles
Plantar ligaments…
provide passive stability to longitudinal and transverse aspects of foot
Intrinsic Foot Layers
- Abductors/Flexor
- Quadratus plantae/lumbricals
- Adductor/Flexor
- Interossei
Foot intrinsics during gait
during stance phase of gait, orientation and location of the abductor hallucis and abductor digiti minimi, positions of these muscles contrinute to stabilization and eccentric control of arch descent during loading
Role of fibularis longus during gait
stabilizes the lateral midfoot, primary evertor of the forefoot
provides compressive force on cuboid, contributes to midtarsal locking
primary PF of first toe
Intrinsic muscles and concentric
intrinsic muscles of the foot contribute to concentric muscle action to provide midfoot power generation
Falls and pain
Individuals with chronic, acute, and foot pain have increased risk of falling, also increased fear of falling
Individuals with foot pain demonstrate
decreased gait speed
decreased stride length
increased double limb support
decreased physical activity
Plantar Loading
remains unchanged post surgically
should work on improving recruitment of peroneals, foot intrinsics, minimalist shoes
