Mercantilism
Active role for state in pursuing national wealth; focus on increasing national wealth through trading
Economic liberalism
Minimal role for the state in the economy; state should protect property and enforce contracts but little else
Communism
Marxism, class system, exploitation; central planning through Five-Year Plan; No private ownership, businesses are nationalized; Little international trading
Social Democracy
Active role for state in support of markets, combo of liberalism and socialism
Neo corporatist institutions
Negotiations between labor, business, and the government to establish economic policy
Democracy
Political power exercised whether directly or indirectly by the people through participation competition, and liverty
Modernization Theory
As societies become wealthier and better educated, they will naturally seek and embrace liberal democracy and want popular control over the government
Elites Theory
Countries democratize the powerful people see that they may be better off as a result
Examples of Elites Theory
Elites may choose democracy for International support (Taiwan) or keeping wealth (South Africa) or international pressure (Japan and Germany; Iraq and Afghanistan)
Civil society
People will demand more change when there is a strong civil society inside the country
