Non-democracy
State leaders are not accountable to the public through free and fair elections
Authoitarianism
Political system in which power is concentrates, and the rulers of the state are not accountable to the public
Totalitarism
An authoritarian system in which state leaders also seek to control every aspect of society by using extreme violence; State/party control of every facet of life
Political violence
Politically motivated violence outside of state control
Types of political violence
Change institutions; actions carried out by none-state-actors; violence between states is subject for international relations
Institutions
Shape and define what society does through political, economic, and societal means
Ideas
Justify or promote the use of violence and provide the rationale behind the violence; radical or reactionary ideas yield violence against current system: religious fundamentalism, nihilism, or anarchism
Individuals
Can focus on the special characteristics of those who actually carry out the violence
Terrorism
The unlawful use of force or violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof in furtherance of political or social objectives
