This law made it illegal for anyone to:
Discriminate against a person because of their race, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origins
Use threatening or abusive language in public that could stir up racial hatred
Publish anything likely to create racial hatred
The Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) (People)
To make sure that the 1976 Race Relations Act was upheld, the CRE was set up in 1976 to fight against all racial discrimination, to monitor ways in which the law was working and advise the government and to build good relations
This makes sure all groups in society are fairly represented such as by appointing MPs from ethnic backgrounds
2001 Race Relations Amendment Act (Laws)
This enabled a person who felt they had been discriminated against to challenge the police in court
This made police officers accountable of their treatment of people and gave them a duty to promote equality by giving them targets for recruiting ethnic minorities
