How have roles of men and women changes?
-Women now mostly have all the same rights as men:
- voting
- equal pay
- discriminating made illegal
Why have attitudes changed towards women?
- UK followed other countries
- Suffragettes worked to gain equal rights
What are Christian attitudes to women?
Roman Catholics (men and women are equal but only men can be priests)
Liberal Protestants (God created everyone equal so they still should be equal)
Evangelicals (men and women should have different roles)
Why is the UK a multi ethnic society?
- After WW2 a shortage of workers lead to different culture working together
- The UK has always been a mixed society
- With the extension in the EU there is more Eastern Europeans
What are the problems with discrimination and racism?
- Prejudice employers will not give jobs to certain people
- Teachers won’t let some reach their potential
- Police officers will offend certain people
What are the benefits of living in a multi ethnic society?
- People can learn about different religions
- Greater verity of culture
- More people to bring skills to the society
What are the effects of discrimination?
- Riots and violence (London riots)
- Crime
- Groups forming
Why is community cohesion important?
- There would be much more violence
- It is impossible to work together as a modern society
- The economy can collapse
What Government actions promote community cohesion?
- Giving money to people
- Making it part of school lessons
- Making the law different so people don’t discriminate
Why do Christian promote racial harmony?
- St Paul taught us all races are equal
- 70% of the church are non white
- The catechism shows that you are going against Gods decision that everyone is equal
How does the Catholic Church promote Community Cohesion?
- Translating signs into other languages
- Finding accommodation
- Legal advice and support for people
- Mass in other languages
What are the issues for religions in multi faith societies?
Raising Children (may be tempted to change faith)
Interfaith Marriages (problem which faith to raise children with)
How do religions work together to promote community cohesion?
- Religions working together to share festivities
- Having inter faith weeks
What are Christian attitudes to other religions?
Inclusivist Catholics (Christians have the whole truth but we should respect others)
Exclusivist Evangelicals (Christians teach the truth and everyone else is false)
Pluralist Liberal Protestants (no religion has the whole truth)
