Bourgeoisie
The owners of factories and other means of production.
BRIC
An acronym for the fast-growing economies of Brazil, Russia, India, and China. They are all fast-growing economies. They are growing so fast that they might overtake the combined economies of the richest countries in the world by 2050.
central planning
The ownership of private property and the market mechanism were replaced with the allocation of resources by the state bureaucracy.
The Communist Manifesto
A book by Karl Marx about his interpretation of history and vision for the future. Witten in 1848.
co-optaion
Allocation (the action or process of distributing something) of power throughout various political, social, and economic institutions.
democratic centralism
Provided for a hierarchal part structure in which leader were elected from below.
Maoism
Maoism shares Marx’s vision of of equality and corporation, but Mao believed very strongly in preserving China’s peasant-based society.
market-based socialism
Instituted by Deng Xiaoping, allows for a significant infusion of capitalism into the system.
Marxism
The father of communism is Karl Marx.
He believed that capitalism would become so bad that workers would come together in a revolution of the proletariate. He envisioned a new world after a new world after revolution, one where social class would disappear because ownership of private property ruled be banned.
Communism encourages equality and corporation.
Government would become unnecessary and wither away.
Marxism-Leninism
A version of Marxism created by Vladimir Lenin.
nomenklatura
the process of filling influential jobs in the state, society, or the economy with people approved and chosen by the Communist Party.
proletarian
Working people.
social mobility
The opportunity for individuals to change their social status over the corse of their lifetimes.
“vanguard of the revolution”
a group of revolutionary leaders who could provoke the revolution in non-capitalsit Russia.
