Physical needs
Needs that keeps the mind and body functioning.
Human beings are social creatures, which makes communication important for survival.
Prolonged isolation has been shown to severely damage a human.
Instrumental needs
Needs that help us get things done in our dat-to-day lives and achieve short-term and long-term goals.
Include influencing others and getting information/support.
Compliance-gaining Communication
Aimed at getting people to do something or act in a particular way.
Common tactics used for compliance gaining
- Offering rewards
- Threatening punishment
- Using expertise
- Liking
- Debt
- Altruism
- Esteem
Promising returns, rewards, or positive outcome.
Offering rewards
By threatening negative consequences like loss of privileges, grounding, or legal action.
Threatening punishment
By implying that one person “knows better” than the other based on age, experience, education, or intelligence.
Using expertise
By acting friendly and helpful to get the other person into a good mood before asking them to do something.
Liking
By calling in past favors and indicating that one person “owes” the other.
Debt
By claiming that one person only wants “what is best” for the other person, and he/she is looking out for their “best interests “.
Altruism
By claiming that the other people will think lore of themselves if he/she complies
Esteem
Relational needs
Includes needs that helps us maintain social bonds and interpersonal relationships.
Communication meets our relational needs by giving us a tool through which to develop, maintain, & end relationship.
Identity needs
How we think of ourselves is based on out communication with other people.
Our identity changes as we progress through life, but communication is the primary means of establishing our identity and fulfilling our identity needs.
