Describe the difference between a “Play Specialist” and a “Play Assistant”
Play Specialist - prepares children for procedures by allowing them to play with hospital equipment that will be used in their procedure
Play Assistant - Helps children play in the “play centre” and when they are bed-bound in hospital
What is most important when taking a child’s history?
Introduce yourself to the child
Start by talking to the child even if parents are main source of history
Kneel to child’s level
How do you ensure that the family are all introduced to you as the correct relatives?
Ask the child to tell you who is with them today
What is play therapy?
Allows children who are anxious to be in hospital to be put at ease
