Keeping the relationship

When is it most and least beneficial to adopting the Accommodating style?
Most effective
- Resolving the conflict is more important to the other party
- Desire to preserve the relationship
- Want something in return in the future
Least effective
- The other party’s position is based on ethically questionable points
- The problems are complex and serious
- The other party adopts a dominant stance - no regard to the other party
When is it most and least beneficial to adopting the Collaborating style?
Most effective
- Disagreements involving objectives, strategic directions, or long-term planning
- To improve your relationship with the other party
- Need commitment of the other party to implement the solution effectively
Less effective
- Urgent solution needed
- The dispute is simple
When is it most and least beneficial to adopting the Avoiding style?
Most effective
- The benefit of the dispute is less than the disruptive effects
- The issue is trivial
- It is impossible to fulfill the interest of both parties
Less effective
- Immediate and binding solution is required for both parties
- The disagreement are serious
When is it most and least beneficial to adopting the Competing style?
Most effective
- The consequence of a solution favourable to the other party results in serious harm to the other
- The solution to the conflict is necessary for urgent decisions, and you have the power to enforce it
Less effective
- Time to find a mutually beneficial solution
- Issue of low importance
- Both parties with equal power
- A quick solution isn’t necessary
When is it most and least beneficial to adopting the Compromising style?
Most effective
- There is a deadlock resolving a conflict
- A temporary solution is needed
- The parties hold balanced powers
- Consensus is not expected

- The other party acts competitively
Why is it easier to manage conflicts in person?
- There is increased rapport and interpersonal alignment.
- The parties are more cordial and friendly.
- There is greater trust and cooperation.
- The parties achieve more collaborative results and a more balanced win-win outcome.

What is an ally?
They join the project and get involved but continue to withdraw. However, they also propose improvements that can advance the project.
What is a supporter?
Project friendly but remote and passive, they are the “silent majority” and require a lot of attention.
What is a hesitant?
Depending on events, they keep the project going in fits and starts: in times of uncertainty, they could be swayed
What is Dissatisfied?
They are dissatisfied with the project but don’t seek any alternatives: they constantly complain!
What is Opponent?
They are ready to start to tackle the project. They’re always right and try to use tension and conflict to strengthen their position in negotiations or to boycott the project.
