What is Therapeutic communication?
- meaningful communication
- actively choosing your tone, choice of words, body language and use of empathy
What is person-centred communication?
- Ensuring communication is tailored towards the patient
What is collaborative communication?
- involving patient other healthcare workers in discussions
What are some verbal communication aspects of therapeutic communication?
- tone, choice of words, clarity and timing, empathy and humour
What are some non-verbal communication aspects of therapeutic communication?
- posture, facial expressions, eye contact, personal space, touch when appropriate
What things should you NOT do when using therapeutic communication?
- approve/disapproval statements
- use stereotypical responses
- false reassurance
What is a Patient Healthcare interview?
- interview upon arrival
- get to know the patient
- build rapport with patient
Subjective assessments with Infants?
- gather information from caregiver
- use gentle and calm speech
Subjective assessments with Early childhood (1-6)?
- gather information through play
- gather information mainly from caregiver
Subjective assessments with Middle childhood (6-12)?
- gather information from both caregiver and child
Subjective assessments with Later childhood (13-19)?
- gather information from caregiver but some children will be mature enough to speak on their own behalf
- can use mix of mature and immature communication
Subjective assessments with Early-Middle adulthood (20-64)?
- gather information from patient
- need to adapt communication to needs and situation
Subjective assessments with Older adults (64+)?
- gather information either from patient or adult children who care for them (legal responsibility)
