Communication
All interactions between one or more message senders and on or more message receivers intended to develop mutual understanding
Messages can be:
verbal
nonverbal
emotional
Ignore the message
sounds silly but we do it all the time with non verbal
Pretend to Listen
acknowledge receipt with minimal feedback
Selective Listening
process and react to only part of the message
Attentive Listening
Grasp the speakers meaning most of the time
Empathetic Listening
Sincere commitment to understanding the words, meaning, emotion, and nonverbal messages
Goals for listening:
minimum: attentive listener
goal: empathetic listener
In which ways can nonverbal messages be seen?
Reflect Cultural beliefs
Can be seen in body postures
Can be heard (tone, inflection, other)
Can be observed as sympathetic responses
Regulating the distance between parties may denote
Safety or threat
Comfort or discomfort
Affection or dislike
Communication distances have been called
Public zone
Social zone
Personal zone
Intimate zone
Public zone:
greater than 12 feet
degree of safety is felt as there is sufficient time and distance to react to any perceived threat and take appropriate action
Social zone
4-12 feet
Distance allows or verbal communication but others are still at a safe distance. Comfortable distance for group interactions
Personal zone
1.4-4 feet
Conversation is more direct. Good distance for two people to communicate earnestly
Intimate zone
less than 1.5 feet
Arms length or less apart. Eye contact is easy. Can be used as nonverbal means of exerting power by threatening personal space
Blink reaction:
blink reactions… in non high stress situations or in situations where our biases about race, gender, and sexual attraction can be eliminated we make very good decisions based on snap judgements especially if it is in an area of our expertise
