communication Flashcards
what is the definition of a network
it is a collection of computers, servers and other network devices (nodes) connected to one another to allow the sharing of recourses and data
what is the definition of the internet
it is a global computer network providing information and communication facilities consisting of many interconnected networks
what is the definition of a network topology
a network topology is the arrangement of nodes (computers or routers etc.) and of the connections between them that make up a network.
what is a data packet
a data packet is a formatted unit of data that is transmitted over a packet switching network
what is a protocol
a protocol is an agreed format or set of rules which allows differing networked devices to communticate
what is the definition of connectivity
it is methods of connecting devices to each other in order to transfer data, including cabling and wireless
what are the four different types of networking topology’s
MESH, STAR, RING, BUS
What is circuit switching
it is a networking technology that provides a dedicated link between two nodes, during the connection, no other data can be transmitted along the same route.
what is packet switching
packets take different routes to the destination. when all the packets arrived, the data is re assembled. (The internet is an example of a packet switching network)
what is routing
it is the method of selecting paths along which packets are sent on a computer network.
what dose a IP address do
it is used as a unique identification of computer systems on a network
what is a DNS ( Internet Domain Name System )
it matches IP addresses to computer system resources
what is a TCP protocol
IP sets out the format of packets and an addressing system. TCP allows packets to be sent and received between computer systems
what is HTTP protocol
Used to transfer multimedia web pages over the internet
what is FTP protocol
it is used when copying a file from one location to another via a network or the internet
what is a protocol stack
it is a set of protocols that work together to provide networking capabilities
what is are the 5 layers of 5 layers protocol
application, transport, network, data link, physical
what is application in the 5 layers protocol
HTTP ( hypertext transfer protocol), SMTP (simple mail transfer protocol), FTP (file transfer protocol), applications that use the transport layer to send requests to connect to remote hosts
what is transport in the 5 layers protocol
TCP(Transmission control protocol is responsible for making sure data is sent and received in the correct order
what is network in the 5 layers protocol
IP(internet protocol), is responsible for the addressing and routing of data.
what is Data link in the 5 layers protocol
Ethernet protocol sends data from the network layer to the physical layer in data frames comprising of a link layer header and a packet
what is physical in the 5 layers protocol
physical connection using NIC to connect to the internet
What is a ethernet protocol
standards for dat formats for transmission using frames and packets and for networking cabling (physical layer) and transmission speeds
what is a Wi-Fi protocol
standards for transmitting data using electromagnetic waves in place of wires including *)”.11 and Bluetooth
what is WAP’s (wireless application protocols )
standards for the use of wireless devices on the internet
