Communicable Disease Flashcards
What are Communicable Disease?
Communicable diseases are diseases that are caused by pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, protists and fungi. Those can spread from one person to another or between animals and people.
What are the types of pathogens?
Bacteria, viruses, protists and fungi.
How can Pathogens spread?
Water, by drinking or bathing in dirty water.
Air, by the breath in, produced by when you cough or sneeze.#
Direct contact, by touching contaminated surfaces, including the skin.
What are pathogens?
Pathogens are microorganisms that enter the body and cause communicable (infectius) disease.
What does pathogens cause?
They cause communicable (infectious) diseases - diseases that can spread easily.
What can be infected by pathogens?
All living organisms can be infected by pathogens. Such as animals and plants.
What are bacteria?
Bacteria are very small cells, which can reproduce rapidly inside your body.
How does bacteria make us feel ill?
They can make you feel ill by producing toxins (poisons) that damage your cell and tissues.
What are viruses?
Viruses are not cells. They’re tiny, and, like bacteria they can reproduce rapidly inside your body.
How dos the viruses makes you feel ill?
The viruses like inside your cells and replicate themselves using the cells’ machinery to produce many copies of themselves. the cell will usually burst, releasing all the new viruses. This cell damage is what makes you feel ill.
What are protists?
There are lots of different types of protists. But they’re all eukaryotes and most of them are single-celled.
Are protists parasites?
Yes, some protists are parasite. Parasites live on or inside other organisms and can cause them damage. They are often transferred to the organism by a vector, which doesn’t get the disease itself.
What are Fungi?
Some fungi are single-celled. Others have a body which is made up of hyphae (thread-like structures. These hyphae can grow and penetrate human skin and the surface of plants, causing diseases. The hyphae can produce spores, which can be spread to other plants and animals.
