Q

Common types of hooks

What should be attached to all hoisting hooks?

A

Slip, grab and sorting hooks

Slip and grab hooks are used to pick up or pull loads. Sorting hooks or “shake-out hooks” are mainly used for picking up steel plate and other structural shapes.

All hoisting hooks should be attached to a chain swivel to avoid the stress of twisting while under load

Q

What should be inspected on a hook before it’s used?

A
  • Throat opening at the narrowest point had increased more than 15% of the original opening
  • The hook has twisted more than 10 degrees from the original plane of the hook
  • The hook has lost 10% or more of its cross-sectional area
  • The hook is cracked or otherwise defective

Q

What must be used if 2 or more ropes are placed over a hook? And what are some safe working practices while using it?

A

A shackle and some safe working practices are avoid crowding and pinching between the ropes. Never use an ordinary bolt to replace a shackles pin. Shackle pins are made of hardened steel. Never place a load on the pin of the shackle as it could come undone. Never place a load on the sides of a shackle (cross-bow loading”) only on pin and the end.

Q

Wire rope clips can be used to form a loop for an easy method of fastening the rope. What are 2 types of clips and how much does it reduce the breaking strength?

A

Fist grip and U-bolt clips. They reduce the breaking strength by up to 20% but can be up to 50% if installed incorrectly

Q

What are the 2 types of eye bolts? And which should never be used for overhead hoisting? Why?

A

Shoulderless and Shoulder. Shoulderless should never be used for overhead lifting because any angle but vertical will break the stem of the bolt.

Q

Shoulder-type eye bolts are able to withstand pulls up to what? And what are the reductions from vertical at 15, 30 and 45 degrees

A

Up to 45 degrees

15° from vertical= 45%
30° from vertical= 65%
45° from vertical= 75%
Over 45° not recommended

Q

What are turnbuckles and what are they used for?

A

Turnbuckles are used to adjust the lengths of slings so that loads that have uneven attachment points can be lifted in a level position.

Q

What are plate clamps?

A

Used for vertical lifting of plates. If pulled for an angle they’ll slide off. Use extreme care when lifting alloy steel, because jaws may slide off. Do not use on stainless steels, jaws will damage the surface
