Meningococcal septicaemia

A

This baby is pale & clammy, and does not wake on undressing. Capil refill >5 secs, HR 160 reg, RR 44, Temp 39.3. His fontanelle is normal, throat slightly red, chest clear and adbo soft. On examining his legs closely he has 5 or 6 small purple marks which do not blanch on pressing. Mum had not noticed these.

metastasis or cauda equina cord compression

A

On examination this gentleman has tenderness of the lumbar spine. His legs are hypertonic with decreased power, decreased sensation of sacrum & feet and hyperreflexia. PR reveals a lack of anal tone and a firm, craggy, enlarged prostate.

admit to clinical assessment unit this could be a compressed cord caused by metastasis or cauda equina

keaves by itself after 6-12 weeks but high recurrence rate

atopic eczema

A

commonest cause of eczema

primarly in children

most children grow out of it

it is itchy dry and red skin

in infants its on scalp and face

in adults and children on the hands, inside of elbows, backs of knees

flare ups are usually caused by triggers
