Common Pharmacologic Management Flashcards
What are the common pharmacologic management?
- Diuretics
- Corticosteroids
- Anticonvulsant
- Anticholinergics
- Dopaminergics
- Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitors
- Analgesics
These drugs reduces cerebral edema by increasing urine outputs. Provide examples
DIURETICS:
- Mannitol
- Furosemide (Lasix)
- Spironolactone
It has anti inflammatory effect that reduces cerebral edema
CORTICOSTEROIDS:
- Dexamethasone
- Hydrocortisone
Example of anticonvulsants commonly used
- Phenytoin (Dilantin)
- Phenobarbital
- Tegritol
Example of commonly used diuretics
- Mannitol
- Furosemide (Lasix)
- Spironolactone
Anticholinergic medications
- Artane (Trihexyphenidyl)
- Cogentin (Benztropine)
- Akineton (Biperiden)
Example of corticosteroids commonly used
- Dexamethasone
- Hydrocortisone
This is used to prevent seizures. It controls movement of NA, K, Ca, Mg ions resulting in a more stable & less responsive nerve cells
ANTICONVULSANT:
- Phenytoin (Dilantin)
- Phenobarbital
- Tegritol
- It reduces rigidity of tremors in Parkinson’s disease
- Reduces overstimulation of imbalance of dopamine & acetylcholine in pts with PD
ANTICHOLINERGICS:
- Artane (Trihexyphenidyl)
- Cogentin (Benztropine)
- Akineton (Biperiden)
These drugs improve muscle flexibility and is used in pts with Parkinson’s disease
DOPAMINERGICS
These transmit neuromuscular impulses by preventing the destruction of acetylcholine
ACETYLCHOLINESTERASE INHIBITORS:
- Neostigmine (Prostigmin)
- Pyridostigmin (Mestinon)
- Ambenomium (Mytelase)
Acetylcholinesterase inhibitor medications
- Neostigmine (Prostigmin)
2.Pyridostigmin (Mestinon) - Ambenomium (Mytelase)
These drugs relieve pain. Most commonly used for headaches, skeletal muscle & joint pain
ANALGESICS:
> Opioid or non-opioid
Example of complimentary & alternative medications
- Ayurveda
- Traditional Chinese Medicine
- Botanical Healing
- Manual Healing methods
It is the Indian system of medicine
AYURVEDA
Example of botanical healing
- Herbal
- Aromatherapy
- Homeopathy
Example of manual healing methods
- Chiropractic
- Massage
- Acupuncture
- Acupressure
- Reflexology
