Acute self-limiting, viral inflammation of the mucosa of the upper respiratory tract (URT)
How many times a year does the common cold occur in children?
5-6 times a year

Viruses:
- rhinoviruses
- coronaviruses
- respiratory syncytial viruses (RSV)
What are the features of the common cold?
Clear/mucopurulent nasal discharge Nasal blockage Sneezing Sore throat Malaise Cough Fever (more common in infants and young children)
What does the management of the common cold involve?
Advice that condition is self-limiting Paracetamol/ibuprofen for pain Reassure that Abx aren't suitable Ensure fluid intake OTC treatment options

What is the prognosis for the common cold?
Good
Lasts for 10-14 days
90% of cases resolve by 15 days
