What are the symptoms of a viral wheeze?
Runny nose, sore throat, cough, fever, lethargy, noisy/fast breathing
What are the signs of viral wheeze?
High pitched expiratory wheeze, use of accessory muscles, reduced air entry, tachypnoea
How would you manage viral wheeze?
Salbutamol inhaler, 3 days prednisolone if moderate severity, simple analgesics, encourage fluids
What are some red flags to look for in viral wheeze?
Unable to speak in full snetences, floppy/unresponsive, not normal colour, breathing very fast, severe tugging at neck and ribs
What is osgood-shattler disease?
An apophysitis of the tibial tuberosity from repetitive strain from patella tendon causing anterior knee pain particularly in adolescence
What may be findings in examination of a knee in osgood-shattler disease?
Tenderness over tibial tuberosity when extending knee again resistance, swelling/bony enlargement of tibial tuberosity
How is osgood-shattler disease managed?
Analgesia, protective knee pads, ice knee, exercise modification
What is toddler diarhhoea?
Chronic, non-specific diarrhoea, age 1-5
What are some differentials for toddler diarrhoea?
Infection, dietary intolerance, IBD, coeliac disease
What dietary chages can be made to help toddler diarrhoea?
Increase fats if low fat diet, reduce ruit/sugary juices, avoid low and high fibre food
What is the treatment for threadworms?
Mebendazole, kills worms
Hygeine measures prevent re-infection from eggs
What are common symptoms of GORD in children?
Vomits after feeding, irritability, arching back, draws kness to chest
What are some causes of GORD in children?
Short, narrow oesophagus, delayed gastric emptying, raised oesophageal sphincter, liquid diet
What are some red flags in children with GORD?
Projectile vomiting, bile stained vomit, haematemesis, chronic diarrhoea
What are some differentials for GORD in children?
Psychological (e.g new environment), migraine, mesenteric adenitis
