There a thinner common nail, used to help with not splitting soft wood

What’s a joist hanger nail?
Short nail (38mm or 1 1/2” long) with a thick barbed or fluted shaft to give good holding power in structural lumber

Hardened nails used for fastening lumber to masonry, they have a large shank and are generally grooved or twisted

There used to hold rigid insulation to walls or roofs. They have a washer on them to help them not penetrate through

What’s a wood screw?
They have a head, smooth shank and a tapered threaded end and allows pieces to be pulled together
What’s a sheet metal screw
They have a sharp point allowing them to cut a starting hole. Typically threaded the whole way
What’s a self tapper
A screw with a little cutter head on the end to allows it to cut there own hole
What’s a drywall nail?
They have a bugle shaped head designed to indents rather then tear through the paper

What’s a deck screw?
Generally are a good coloured, electro-galvanized coating that’s intended for outside use. They have deep course threads and counter sinking head
What’s a lag screw/ bolt?
Lag screws have very course threads and either a square or hex head. Used for heavy construction where small screws would hold enough
What’s a self sealing screw?
There used to attach metal cladding to roof or walls. They have a neoprene rubber or plastic washer under the head to seal the hole
