COMM-DIS 100 Study Set #2 (Terminology) Flashcards
Etiology
cause/origin of the problem(what caused this disorder or why did it arrive in the first place?)
Predisposing
underlying problem (genetic failure)
Precipitating
triggering problems (something happens that functions as a trigger; a stroke, car accident, brain injury)
Perpetuating
continue to add (continues making the disorder worse; loud environments
Prevalence
number of people in a specified population ( The prevalence of stuttering in the population is ⅓)
Assessment
systematic process of obtaining info from many sources (If we know someone has a disorder, we run tests to hypothesize what the speech/language/impairment maybe)
Diagnosis
distinguish individuals with disorders from individuals without disorders (based on the data you can say what type of disorder a patient has)
Report
The write-up of your assessment (observations, tests, prognosis, results)
Prognosis
what will the outcome of therapy be (desired result)
How do you collect authentic data?
- Ex. patient history, questionnaire, interview
- Yes/No questions are not as effective when uncovering data from patient
- Observation (Is the child using fingers to build legos)
- Speech and language sample (fake standardized test, playtime with child, picture cards, recordings)
- Hearing test
