pain resulting from an acute injury, has a rapid onset & short duration, and subsides when injury is healed
acute pain
persistent pain lasting >6mo; may be episodic or continuous, may lead to disability
chronic pain
sharp, burning, aching, cramping, stabbing; originated from the visceral or somatic
nocioceptive pain
pain from organs
visceral pain
occurs w/ injury to skin, muscles, bones, & joints
somatic pain
pain that stems from cancer or cancer treatment
cancer/malignant pain
acute pain that proceeds to chronic pain and may be prolonged and potentially life-threatening
noncancer pain
episodic or continuous pain that results from a nerve injury & persists even without painful stimuli
neuropathic pain
pain in an area other than the area causing the pain
referred pain
neuropathic, or pathologic, pain from loss of a body part
phantom pain
perceived pain without a physical cause
psychogenic pain
spike in pain when chronic pain already exists
