combustion Flashcards
What is complete combustion
exothermic reaction
combustion that reacts with enough oxygen
Equation for complete combustion
Hydrocarbon + oxygen➡️
carbon dioxide+ water
What is incomplete combustion?
Not enough air/oxygen reacts with reactants
Equation for incomplete combustion
hydrocarbon + oxygen ➡️
Carbon monoxide + water
Or Carbon + water
What forms when incomplete combustion happens
carbon monoxide and soot
What forms when complete combustion happens
Carbon dioxide is produced
Danger of carbon monoxide
Odourless/colourless
Binds to the haemoglobin =⬇️ oxygen transported around the body
danger of soot
can lead to respiratory problems
forms smog, which causes global dimming
how is sulfur dioxide formed?
During combustion an impurity may cause sulphur to becomes oxidised, forming sulphur dioxide
How does nitrogen oxide form?
Nitrogen reacts with oxygen in air, forming nitrogen oxide
danger of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide
Damage too long leading to respiratory problems
Both mixed with clouds and dissolve forming dilute, sulphuric, acid or nitric acid which leads to acid rain
Danger of acid rain
damages buildings, and corrodes metals
Damage plants or makes soil more acidic, making it harder to grow plants
