Combustion Flashcards
What is crude oil a mixture of?
Crude oil is a mixture of many different hydrocarbons
What is a hydrocarbon?
A hydrocarbon is a compound containing only hydrogen and carbon
Name 3 things crude oil is used for:
Petrol, diesel, heating houses
What is combustion?
Burning a substance in oxygen
What is oxidation?
Oxidation is when something gains oxygen
What is incomplete combustion?
Incomplete combustion is burning substances in insufficient oxygen
When a fuel burns, it reacts with oxygen from the air. What is produced?
Carbon dioxide gas and water vapour are produced, as well as energy.
A test for carbon dioxide gas turns limewater what?
Cloudy
How can we test for water?
Blue cobalt chloride paper turns pink in the presence of water.
When does incomplete combustion occur and what does it form?
Incomplete combustion occurs when a fuel burns in a limited supply of oxygen. Instead of forming carbon dioxide (CO2), you form carbon monoxide or sometimes just carbon (soot).
When a candle burns, what chemical reaction happens?
Candle wax + oxygen —> carbon dioxide + water (+ energy)
