What are the primary colours?
Red
Yellow
Blue.
What are the secondary colours?
Green (Blue + Yellow)
Orange (Yellow + Red)
Violet (Red + Blue)
These colours are created by mixing equal amounts two primary colours.
What are Tertiary Colours?
They are the third group of colours created by mixing a primary colour with a secondary colour, this produces 6 new colours for the colour wheel.
How do you get a Tint?
By adding WHITE to a colour (or hue) we get a TINT.
How do you get a Shade?
By adding BLACK to a colour (or hue) we get a SHADE.
How do you get a Tone?
By adding GREY to a colour (or hue) we get a TONE.
What is the correct name for a colour?
a HUE
What are not Colours or Hues?
Black, White and Grey are not colours, they are not
included in the colour wheel, therefore they are not Hues.
What are advancing colours?
Warm colours.
What are Receding Colours?
Cool Colours.
What are Contrasting Colours?
Colours that are positioned opposite of each other in the colour wheel.
What are Harmonious Colours?
Colours that are positioned next to each other on the colour wheel.
Weight?
Dark tones make objects appear heavy, light tones make them appear less heavy.
Strength?
Pale colours (sometimes referred to as pastels) give the impression of softness, whereas dark colours appear to be strong.
Temperature?
Red, orange and yellow indicates warm whereas white, blue, violet and green appear cool.
