Range of light and dark
Shading
Using dark and light values to make objects look solid
Chairoscuro
Means light and dark; is the technical term for shading.
Spectrum
Seven colors of a rainbow appear from a beam of light passing through a prism
Hue
Identifies a color and tells you what it is
Primary colors
colors that cannot be made; red, yellow, and blue
Secondary colors
the combination of two primary colors; orange, green, and violet
Intermediate colors
combination of a primary and secondary colors; blue-green
Complementary
Directly opposite each other on the color wheel - red and green, orange and blue
Monochromatic
Paintings that use tints and shades of just one color
Intensity
Brightness or dullness of a color; also known as saturation
Color harmonies
Colors that create satisfying or startling effects when placed together; aka color schemes
Tint
when a color is added to white
Shade
when black is added to a color
Warm colors
Red, orange, and yellow make us think of hot things like the sun and fire
Cool colors
Blue, green, and violet remind you of cool things such as leafy trees, cool water, and shade
Neutral colors
colors that are not present on the color wheel; white, black, brown, and grey
Triad colors
3 colors that are spaced equally on the color wheel; red, yellow, and blue
Achromatic
a color harmony that consists of only black, white, and shades of grey
Analogous colors
3-5 colors beside each other on the color wheel; blue, blue-green, green, and yellow-green
