Q

What was self-governance?

A

The idea of self-governance first arose in Europe as the thought of limited monarchy came into view. This was first displayed on the Magna Carta, where it was acknowledged that monarchs were not above the law. This is later translated into “modern” interpretations as colonization played out. Things like the English Bill of Rights and colonies like Rhode Island and Connecticut (charter colonies), set the stage for limited government. The Mayflower Compact and Virginia are examples of self-reliance and independence.
