-expanding territory of Great Britain

Difference between colonialism & colonization
-colonialism: the relationship between the colonizers & those who have been colonized
-colonization: the action of the “mother country” establishing new colonies & exerting control over the inhabitants
Impacts of colonization:
-is evident in all aspects of the dominant society
-justice
-incarceration rates, racial profiling, child apprehensions
-education
-funding for on reserve schools, lower graduation rates, fewer represented in STEM, higher attrition on post-secondary
-health
-health disparities - chronic illness, HIV/AIDS, mental health issues, addiction, abuse
-Trauma - residential schools, MMIWG

Environmental management
-loss of land
The economy & financial system
-higher rates of poverty, difficulty gaining access to credit
Employment
-higher unemployment rates, difficulty finding meaningful employment, relates to housing
Politics
-lower voter turnout, fewer elected officials
Culture
-loss of language, traditional knowledge, ceremony
Decolonization
Reversing the damage inflicted upon indigenous peoples through the educational, health, social, justice, & political systems
Colonization vs decolonization
Colonization: about the colonizer imposing its worldview on the original inhabitants
Decolonization: about the colonizer respecting the original inhabitants worldviews
Justice
Indigenous people were more likely to:
-be denied bail
-spend more time in pre-trial detention
Becharged with multiple offences, often for crimes against the system
Have limited time with judges, who visit indigenous communities intermittently
Be incarcerated
Justice as a tool of oppression
In sask RCMP have a direct role to play in colonization
-removing children to residential schools
-enforcing the reserve policy & restricting movement
MMIWG
Result - INDG peoples living in fear of the people who are supposed to protect them
How did colonization begin in Canada
Canada experienced settler colonialism as Europeans aggressively took land from indigenous peoples and over time displayed and greatly outnumbered them
