English Civil War 1642-49
Charles I
Before the war, Charles 1 dismisses parliament to lessen their influence in England. Persecuting Puritans because they make up a large opposition to him. 1630-42, great migration to the west indies, southern colonies and massachussets bay. They welcome parliament back in 42 after Charles death, and kicks off civil war.

New England Confederation 1643
Connecticut, Plymouth and Massachussets bay form together for mutual protection from the french, dutch, and natives. Strong French presence.

Era of Benign Neglect
1607-The restoration/1660. England leaves the colonies alone, don’t care much as long as they bring in a lot of money. west indies bringing in more money from the sugar islands. Free to form their government. They are occupied with inner turmoil.

Charles II
The restoration in 1660 will end the neglect. Charles II restores monarchy, goal to gain control kingdom and colonies. Massachusetts most important colony at that moment. Accuse Massachusetts for independent spirit and for ignoring the navigation laws. Remove Connecticut and Rhode island from their colony and give them their own charter. 1684, Charles II revokes Massachusetts charter and make it a royal colony.
1686, Dominion of New England
Established by England in 1686 and form the Dominion of new England to cordinate for colonial defense and navigation laws. Everything good should be flowing to England, Mercantilism. Restrict colonial trades to control trade. Restrict manufacturing, buy materials and make the products themselves and sell them to other countries themselves. increase in Smuggling

Put the clamp down on boston, creates problems with the puritans. Supports the Anglican church, so the puritans don’t like that. Dismisses the colonial assembly. cuts back on freedom of the press. Tax them without consent. Enforce navigation laws, Suppress smuggling, everyday soldiers bother the puritans. Replaces colonial judges with english ones. Enlarges suffrage, allowing all men to vote, attacking the members of the Puritan church.

They tear apart the dominion after hearing of the glorioius revolution in england. William and marry restor order. Colonial to royal colonies. They get governors appointed to them. Decloration of RIghts is sighed that guaratees certain rights to people. Constitutional rights to those under the english crown
Salutary Neglect 1689-1763
Crown leaves them alone. The navigation fees are not heavily enforced. Chooses to let them be. Free to trade, some limited royal guidance,

Representative government. Expecting the rights of Englishmen so they need those rights.

House of Burgesses in 1619
people who had to vote had to be land owners. It is dominated by those with a lot of money and power and land, unlike the folks on the outside area of virginia, tension because they want more of a say in the governemnt. class tension
Massachusetts bay
Government
All male church members, congregational church, puritans. All male members. There was limited separation of church and state, not a true theocracy. They didn’t want it to be corrupt, so the clergy could be fired so they don’t gain too much power. Enforce gods law, tax supported church. Local Town government, majority rules.
