Collisional activation Flashcards
Collisional activation
Give molecular ion more energy to fragment it (ES or MALDI)
How are molecular ions collisionally activated?
Exposure to collision gas as they pass through a collision chamber located between 2 analysers
How does MS/MS work
1st analyser selects ions produced in source and collisionally activates them. 2nd analyser separates fragment ions and any non-fragmented molecular ions
How does triple quadrupole work?
Molecular ions selected in 1st (m/z), fragmented in 2nd (collision gas), fragments analysed in 3rd. - Robust, reliable, cheap
Q-TOF
Quadrupole allows all ions through, TOF = mass analyser (pulses of ions accelerated into TOF by “pusher”)
Q-TOF/TOF
Quadrupole allows selected ions through collision cell (cont. collision gas). TOF = mass analyser
