Collision theory and reversible reactions Flashcards

1
Q

what is collision theory?

A

the theory that particles must collide with a certain amount of prerequesit energy in order to initiate a chemical reaction

Q

According to collision theory, what would speed up the rate of reaction?

A

the shape of the particles
the surface area
the amount of energy (heat) present

Q

Would a chemical reaction involving 4 reactants be easier or harder to react than one with 2 reactants, explain

A

collision theory states that particles must collide with enough energy to react, getting 4 different particles to collide with enough energy is much more difficult then getting 2 different particles to collide

thus a reaction involving 2 reactants would be easier to initate

Q

What is a catalyst

A

a substance that lowers the required initial energy through it’s shape and is not consumed in the reaction

Q

What is le chatelier’s principle and what does it say about reversible reactions?

A

reversible reactions will respond to change in conditions by shifting the equilibrium in order to counteract the change

Q

A + B <-> C + D is a reversible reaction
When the concentration of C and D are reduced, which direction will the reaction shift?

A

right, as less C and D are able to react. Only when enough A+B has reacted into C+D, will the reaction stabilize

Q

A+B <-> C is a reversible reaction
When the two sides have equal mass, which direction will the reaction shift?

A

left, as collision theory dictates that the less reactants involved, the faster it reacts

Q

A+B <-> C is a reversible reaction
When the container is shrunk, which direction will the reaction shift?

A

right, as A+B will be colliding more due to greater pressure
