Empiricism

Prinicipal- Agent Relationship
An arrangement in which one entity (the agent) acts on behalf of another (the principal).
Agenda Power
The control over what a group will consider for discussion.
Bargaining
Negotiation to reach a mutual agreement.
Public Good
A good that is non-excludable and non-rivalrous, benefiting all members of society.
Free Riding
Benefiting from a good without contributing to the cost of its provision.
Tragedy of the Commons
The depletion of a shared resource by individuals acting according to their own self-interest.
Path Dependency
The idea that certain possibilities are made more or less likely because of decisions made in the past.
Veto Power
The ability to defeat something even if it has made it on to the agenda.
The French and Indian War
A conflict between Britain and France in North America from 1754 to 1763.
Taxation Without Representation
The principle that it is unfair to tax someone without giving them a voice in government.
Boston Tea Party
A 1773 protest against British taxes in which Boston colonists disguised as Mohawks dumped tea into Boston Harbor.
Boston Massacre
A 1770 incident in which British troops fired on and killed American colonists.
Declaration of Independence
The 1776 document stating that the 13 English colonies were a free and independent nation.
Charles Beard
An American historian who argued that the Constitution was designed to protect the economic interests of the Founding Fathers.
Great Compromise
The agreement to create a two-house legislature.
