College 7 Flashcards
What is co-articulation?
variation in the pronounciation of a phoneme that is caused by the articualotry properties of neighborings sounds
What is redundancy?
individual segments provide clues about preceding and following segments
What is variability?
the mapping between phonemes and sounds is not as neat as we might hope
What is categorical perception?
a pattern of perception where continuous changes in a stimulus are perceived not as gradual but as having a sharp break between discrete categories
forced choice identification task
experimental task in whcih subjects are required to categorise stimuli as fallin into one of two categories
What are regiolects?
vowels different produces because of region
what are socialects
vowels different produced because of social status
What is motor theory of speech perception
a theory that the perception of speech sounds involves accessing representaions of the articulatory gestures that are required to make those speech sounds
What is the McGurk effect?
An illusin oin whcih the mismatch between auditory informaiton and visual information pertaining to a sounds articulation results in altered perception of that sound
What is coarticulation?
variation in the pronunciation fo a phoneme that is caused by the articulatiory properties of neighbouring sounds
what is perceptual invariance?
the ability to perceive soudns that have highly variable acoustic manifestations as instance of the same sound category
