Collection of Evidence Flashcards
Bruce’s Aim
To see if theres a difference in our ability to recognise faces based on internal or external features of the facial composite with celebrities
Bruce’s Sample
He used to a self selected sample to gather 30 staff and students form Stirling University.
Bruce’s Procedure
3 conditions where they were given 10 pictures of celebrities and tasked to sort through 40 composite images choosing 4 per face. Conditions varied on whether they had just internal/ external or both.
Bruce’s Results
No significant difference between the accuracy of those with entire face composites or just external features, 35% correct. Internal features only match 19.5% of the time.
Bruce’s Suggestions
When witnesses are recalling internal features its best not to fully trust the accuracy. Also general statistics are low.
Bruce’s Pros
- Less demand characteristics or order effects
- Less researcher bias
- High control
- Quantitative data
- Useful applications
Bruce’s Cons
- Not representative sample
- Low ecological validity due to lack of consequence
- Individual differences
- Celeb faces makes task easier
