COLLAPSE Flashcards
If possible, where should both 1st and 2nd arriving Engines be positioned at a collapse? (5.3.1.1)
Outside the block, on hydrants on separate mains, prepared to supply handlines and a TL.
note (7.2.1) at times it may be necessary for the 1st arriving Engine to take a position WITHIN THE BLOCK for use of apparatus master stream for fire control or exposure protection.
Engine 33 responded first due to a major collapse at East 7th and 2nd Ave. After extinguishing fire in the affected building they then knocked down pockets of fire in the surrounding debris and extinguished a burning car fire adjacent to the building. Their next move was to protect the #2 exposure where fire was threatening it. Did E-33 operate correctly here?
No. After extinguishing fire in surrounding debris they should have protected the exposure.
Order of Priority, First Alarm Engine Companies:
1) extinguish fire in affected building and surrounding debris.
2) Protect Exposures.
3) Burning vehicles in vicinity.
4) NO ACTIVE FIRE? stretch, charge precautionary 2 1/2” lines (sufficient number, length) to cover entire operation.
3) stretch a 3 1/2” line and supply the first arriving TL.
4) At a suspected terrorist event, 2 1/2” hoselines should be positioned between two apparatus or other substantial shielding.

Rig placement at a major collapse in Harlem went as follows:
Initially, the first arriving TL was the only unit in front of the collapse building, outside the collapse danger zone, because there was no apparent need for an aerial for rescue. Subsequent TL’s were positioned behind the building to cover maximum area.
Is this correct as far as initial rig placement?
