Collagen and ECM Flashcards
1
Q
What cleaves all proteins found in the ECM (including collagen and laminin)?
A
Matrix metalloproteinases -expression of these enzymes allows cell migration and tissue remodeling during growth and differentiation -destruction of the ECM by MMPs releases growth factors that may be bound to hte ECM- allows growth factors to bind to cell surface receptors to initiate growth of tissues -Cancer cells that metastasize require extensive ECM remodeling and usually use MMP activity to spread throughout th ebody MMPs are regulated by a class of inhibitors known as TIMPs-tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases
