Conflict
-Conflict arises when individuals hold incompatible or seemingly incompatible ideas, interests, beliefs, values or goals

What does it Take to Cause a Conflict?
For a conflict to occur, you need:
-people: a conflict can occur between individuals or between groups. It can occur anywhere: at home, at work, or when you are socializing.
-emotions: individuals or groups may have strong feelings about the situation. This may include any one or many of the following emotions.
- Angry
- Jealous
- Lonely
- Cheated
- Scared
- frustrated
Stages of Conflict
1.Pre-conflict: difference and tensions
2.Confrontation: disputes-neither side will admit a mistake
3.Crisis: hostilities and violence-communication is halted
4.Outcome: force may runs its course until one party wins
5.Post-conflict: end of (violent) confrontation
6.Communication channels opened: both sides agree that solution is needed
7.Mutual understanding: Understand view of others and respect them
8.Finding solutions: An approach is found that everyone agrees upon-solutions are agreed and acted on
9.Agreement: Everyone agrees-accept the views of others

Conflict Generators (factors)
- Client behaviours change (medical or psychiatric conditions),
- withdrawal alcohol/drugs
- difficulty communicating (aphasic),
- medication side-effects,
- troublesome behaviour, anxious, confused
- ineffective coping skills
- inadequate support network.

- incorrect perceptions or assumptions,
- is judgmental

- communication negatively affected by working condition
- avoidance and postponing of conflict resolution
- fear of reprisal impeding the reporting of conflict by staff

- non supportive environment/team member
- new grads not supported by experienced nurses
- colleagues intentionally put in situations beyond their capabilities
Strategies for preventing/ managing colleagues conflict
- promote a respectful environment by modeling professional behaviors
- address conflict directly rather than postponing
- validate assumptions
- mentoring
- support and integrate new staff into practice settings
- reflect on personal attitudes, values and beliefts
- implement policies that do not tolerate non professional behaviours
- educate managers and staff in communication
- support effective collaboration
- identify and address staffing needs
- foster positive relationship
