What is infant colic?
A term used to describe a common symptom complex that occurs during the first few months of life
What % of babies does colic affect?
Up to 40%
When does colic occur?
Typically in first few weeks of life, resolving gradually from 3-12 months of age
What is colic defined as?
Episodes of crying for more than 3 hours a day, for more than 3 days a week, for 3 weeks, in an otherwise healthy child
Is colic a gastrointestinal disorder?
There is no firm evidence that colic is gastrointestinal, but it is often suspected
Is colic serious?
No, the condition is benign
What is the clinical relevance of colic?
It is very frustrating and worrying for parents, and may precipitate non-accidental injury in infants already at risk
What causes colic?
Unknown
What are the symptoms of colic?
- Paroxysmal, inconsolable crying or screaming
- Passage of excessive flatus
What are the signs of colic?
Drawing up of knees
What is the diagnosis of colic made on the basis of?
Usually a clinical diagnosis, based on symptoms after ruling out other possible causes
How are other possible causes ruled out in colic?
Via history and physical exam
Are additional tests required in colic?
Not usually
What are the differential diagnoses for colic?
- Cow’s milk protein allergy
- Gastrooesophageal reflux
What is the management of colic?
Support and reassurance to parents
