Cold War
A war without direct fighting/ combat.
Partition
Divide
Proxy Wars
Wars fought through supporting a third party or country.
Zionism
The establishment of the Jewish nation of Palestine.
Refugees
People who were discriminated out of their country.
Superpowers
Nations with the political, economic, and military power to influence events around the world.
Ideology
A set of beliefs.
Containment
A U.S. policy to “contain” communism from spreading to other parts of the world.
Satellite states
Countries in Eastern Europe that are formally independent, but under heavy political and military influence or control by another country.
Bloc
A group of nations with a common purpose.
McCarthyism
Accusations of Communist activity against individuals, often with little or no evidence against the accused.
Decolonization
Former colonies gaining their independence.
Third World Countries
“Developing Countries” (Most have not industrialized), not aligned with either the U.S. or the U.S.S.R. during the Cold War. Experience the lowest standard of living.
Exploitation
Unfair treatment of someone for your benefit.
Nationalism
The unique cultural identity of a people based on common language, religion, national symbols (flags), etc.
